It’s happening.

I’m one haircut and about two kids short of officially becoming “that” mom.

Oh you know who I’m talking about.

She’s the lady at the grocery store putting as many items back on the shelf as she is tossing into her cart. You know how that one goes…1 item in, 3 back out.

She’s the one in line apologizing for all the fishy crackers spilled across the conveyor belt; an emergency snack that just couldn’t wait.

She’s got boogers on the back of her shirt, her pants are sagging from pockets full of pacifiers, toys and left over pretzel bites.

She’s also probably bare foot because her kids hid her shoes (once again).

She’s the lady you blaze by in the parking lot because her kids are refusing to sit in their car seats. Oh and she’s driving a mini van.

Wait…I’m driving a mini van!

Oh yes, it is happening and I’m pretty damn thrilled about it.

So is this guy:

Oh, she’s a beauty isn’t she? More of a beauty meets beast but man can she hold a lot of shit. So far we’ve fit 8 people, 3 surf boards, 1 kayak and a whole bunch of random and now possible to take with us crap!
Welcome to the family my little mini, you are oh so loved and cherished.

Catching up and a Birthday Celebration

Wow, three months later and mamasurfs is back online! Huge props to papa who in the midst of never ending work, late nights and sickness pulled an all nighter to fix this site and give mama back her happy place :)

So where do we start? Last time I blogged was back in January and I left you all hanging with the most adorable birthday invitation you’ve ever seen (ok, i’m a bit biased since hubby made it)!

Should we jump back in with a full review of the birthday bash?

As you may recall the theme was a full on circus and on the invitation each guest was asked to dress accordingly. We had so much fun pulling together all of the little details, and even more fun trying on the different costumes grandma and grandpa brought from the dress up bin back in California. If you’ve ever met hubby you might have taken him for a quiet, shy guy but after seeing these photos you’ll know the truth…dudes a freak and loves to fly his freak flag loud and proud when given the opportunity!

They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and I’m beginning to think that statement is pretty accurate. Most toddlers would turn, run and cry when they saw something so big, bright and crazy running their way. Not my boy, oh no…he just grabbed a wig and joined the party!

With so much color, excitement, fun food, such a beautiful setting and outgoing group of friends and family the party was nothing short of incredible. Thank you so much to everyone who helped us pull off this wild circus and for those of you who helped celebrate our little man whether you were near or far! And now, pictures from the big day!
The birthday boy himself dressed up as the Ring Master! My mom made him his adorable jacket and we ordered his bow tie and vest onesie from Etsy.

We tried to keep the food within the circus theme and had a popcorn machine, nacho station, hot dogs, kale salad, fruit salad in ice cream cones and some cute veggie shot glasses with ranch dressing. Everything was prepared “grab and go” style!
One of my favorite details from the party was our photo net. Hubby and I went through over a 100 different photos pulling our favorites from throughout the year. We tried to choose pictures that showed Harper’s personality and as you know, this kid has had quite the year!

The dessert table was another one of my favorite details of the party. My mom scored these great table cloths for my baby shower (which was also circus themed…full circle huh?) and so we used them to bring some color and whimsy to the table. I made the cupcakes and with the help of these adorable toppers loved how they turned out. We used different shaped vases I scored at goodwill as candy dishes and supplied goodie bags to fill as party favors.

We decorated the house and yard with loads of balloons and brightly colored pom-poms also from Etsy. The yard was full of games like ring toss, ball throw, fishing and different areas like the “maze” of tunnels, and the baby play area.

As costumed guests filled in, the space became even more “decorated” and the excitement was contagious! Soon we had a house full of mimes, animals, snake charmers, dare devils, clowns and one very happy birthday boy!

The party was a huge success but my favorite part? At the end after most of our guests had left we took Harper out for his most favorite thing in the whole wide world…a bike ride! This bike ride was like no other, our family of three had transformed into a flashy zebra, a fortune teller and one very content Ring Master. With balloons tied to the backs of our bikes and memories from the day filling our minds we raced down the hill towards the beach and enjoyed the last few moments of sunset together.

Getting Jiggy With It

Hubby and I have made it a point to limit the amount of toys and unnecessary baby stuffs in our lives, BUT this past weekend I couldn’t help myself. When I saw the Johnny Jump Up toy at Target I knew it was perfect for our active dude. Technically, the Johnny Jump Up isn’t for babies that are under 4 months of age but our little man is strong and absolutely LOVES standing up. On top of that, this mama was in desperate need of something to entertain Mr. Man for a few minutes while trying to brush my teeth or make a sandwich. What can I say we are BFF’s and he loves to have his mama in sight and at hand!

Check out this grin as papa showed him his new toy:

The Johnny Jump Up has been magical. Not only does Harper love it but it frees me up just long enough to get a quick chore done (you saw how desperate our house was) and maybe even squeeze in a workout. Harper absolutely loves being able to stand up and look around. He is able to turn himself in circles and follow mama and papa throughout the house and absolutely loves chewing on the soft fabric (teeth already?!) He hasn’t quite figured out the “jumping” part of this toy but I figure that will come. We limit his time in here to about 10-15 minutes a turn and that is enough to wear him out enough for a great big nap! If you have a little one around this age I definitely recommend scoring one of these awesome exercisers!

The Johnny Jump is wild fun:

Creative or just plain dumb?

It’s no secret that we live in a small 1 bedroom condo. Our surfboards take up half our bedroom, our re-cycling center lays somewhere between the kitchen and the bathroom, we have cans of refried beans neighboring up to a power drill in our pantry. Space is definitely an issue so when we decided on this whole baby thing we weren’t really sure how we would manage to fit another person let alone all his stuff into our home.

After many hours of staring blankly at the walls an idea finally hit me! What is we put the baby in the closet?

Haha, I know you are probably thinking this is the dumbest thing you have ever heard but think about it…the closet is really the perfect place for a newborn. Not only can it be made into a cozy little nook but it’s also conveniently located next to mom and dad’s bed for those nighttime feedings and late nights of pulling our hair out.

The plan is to take the closet doors off, put our bed on an actual frame so that we can utilize all the space underneath for our clothes and extra storage and convert the closet into a baby beach shack.

My idea is to paint the walls a sunny yellow color, find some palm frond/beach grass to hang out and create the “shack” feeling and make fun surf print bedding for the little guy. Our mini crib fits perfectly in the space and it already has built in drawers and cubbies for storing all of babies clothes, blankets, etc…

Here is what our bedroom and closet look like currently:

And here are some snapshots of inspiration and features I hope our “nursery” will have:

Colors- Yellows, oranges, blues, browns

Art- A collection of “vintage” signs

it’s all a rough idea right now but hopefully over the next few weeks we will slowly start to create our little mans beach shack!

Rockabye Baby!

Just because you’re a new parent doesn’t mean you have to compromise your musical taste. Rockabye Baby cleverly transformed the Beach Boys’ greatest hits into soothing instrumental lullabies.

Whirled Peas

Before baby can work on world peace, she’s going to have to work on whirled peas…the kind that come in baby food jars and end up splattered around the kitchen instead of in her mouth. And if the peas end up drooled down the front of this entertaining onesie? No problem…they’ll blend right in. 200904291216.jpg
