Word of the Week: Accept

It makes sense that the word of the week should start on Monday so from here on out that’s when the weekly word challenge will be posted. As I mentioned before, I’m starting with the words I had chosen back in 2010 when I first created this challenge for myself. It’s important for me to relive these words as they meant so much to me at the time and fun to see how the same words have evolved to mean such different things now that my world has changed so much. This weeks word is…

Accept

1 word at a time, 1 step at a time, 1 day at a time. This is the goal. Simplify it. Slow it. Embrace it. Appreciate it. I hope this space offers a bit of peace and inspiration to those of you who join me here. Mamasurfs is a work in progress, I am a work in progress and I invite you to join me in this journey and please chime in whenever you feel inspired to do so :)

Today my challenge is to accept.

: to receive willingly

: to be able or designed to take or hold

: to give admittance or approval to

: to endure without protest or reaction

: to regard as proper, normal, or inevitable

: to recognize as true

: believe

: to agree to undertake

Deep breath. This one is certainly a challenge for me. Accept the good, the bad, the past, the present. Accept it and continue to move forward. Sometimes we accept life with open arms and other times we accept that life has happened. We certainly can’t control a great deal of this rollercoaster of life but we certainly have the power to accept what it was, what it is, and all that it will be. I truely believe that once we learn to accept, we learn to be free. When we are free the future belongs to us and there is nothing greater than the breakout smile, make you want to dance feeling of knowing the future is ours to paint! Let’s learn to accept all that life is together.

I’m carrying this quote in my back pocket today as I try to live with more acceptance in my heart:

“Kiss your life. Accept it, just as it is. Today. Now. So that those moments of happiness you’re waiting for don’t pass you by.”- Unknown

This Moment

This Moment- A Friday ritual. A single photo- no words- capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor, and remember. If you’re inspired to do the same, leave a link to your ‘moment’ in the comments for all to find and see.

Word of the Week: Embrace

Long ago, before Harper’s arrival, during a time in my life where I desperately needed some uplifting and focus I had an idea: 26 letters, endless possibilities. A word a week. A personal mantra, an emotion, inspiration, a goal.

To focus one’s mind from the endless distractions of life, to remember to take deep breaths, to pause, observe, appreciate. One word, a jumble of letters and the limitless potential to open our minds, our hearts, our souls to this incredible journey of life. One word at a time, one day at a time and hopefully the evolution of a soul.

I’ve decided to bring back this little experiment and invite you to join me in this challenge. However simple it may seem I believe the power of this exercise may transform our days and maybe even lives in ways never imagined. I’m going to start with the words that I began with way back in February of 2010 and continue on from there.

Today let’s Embrace.

IMG_4946.JPG

:to take or clasp in the arms; press to the bosom; hug.

:to take or receive gladly or eagerly; accept willingly

: to embrace an idea.

:to avail oneself of

: to embrace an opportunity.

:to adopt (a profession, a religion, etc.)

:to take in with the eye or the mind.

:to encircle; surround; enclose.

:to include or contain

How will you embrace the day? Those around you? Challenges? Victories? The seemingly trivial and the profound?

I challenge myself, and I challenge you to embrace each moment of today. Slow down and take it in. Don’t let moments simply pass you by but embrace each one and grab hold appreciating the gift of now. I’ll leave you with this quote and wish you a day of joy and a new awareness as you embrace what lies ahead:

“Never anticipate a moment or day in your life, instead learn to anticipate every moment and embrace everyday. Find greatness in everything and purpose even in the hardest times.”

Love for Mamasurfs

Thank you all who have responded to my “who’s out there” post and let me know you are following along and enjoying mamasurfs! I have loved hearing from all of you and am so inspired and encouraged by your kind words, pictures and simple hellos.

Did you know that mamasurfs also has a Facebook page? We’ve been up and running on Facebook for a few months now but honestly kind of forgot about keeping it up to date (hey, I’ve had my hands full with the whole baby thing you know?). It’s an easy way for you to follow the blog, shoot me some questions or thoughts and build up a fun mamasurfs community. Check out mamasurfs on facebook and “like” the page to see updates in your newsfeed.

Mama is also on Twitter if you’re down with the tweets…still figuring that one out too.

Celebration

There are lots of reasons to celebrate in life but never did I imagine I would be throwing myself a mini party in celebration of this:

IMG_5010.JPG IMG_5009.jpg

This is months of phone calling, internet shopping, researching, begging, pleading and finally contacting a bankrupt company finally paying off. This is one step closer to calling our remodel project complete. A step closer to an office for hubby who has in the past 5 years worked everywhere from a closet, to a counter top, stuffed in the corner and everywhere in between. This is the beginning of our baby moving out of our closet and into his own space, a space I imagine him spending quiet time reading and lots of loud time making believe with monsters and trucks and anything else his wild imagination can conjure up.

This is hands down one of the best reasons to celebrate so please excuse me while I continue my happy dance….

Hairy Situation

Take one look at me and you’ll know that what I’m about to tell you is the honest to God truth.

I haven’t had a hair cut in over a year…eeek! Even worse…that haircut was given in the middle of my moms kitchen as a last minute pre-baby shower trim. Now mom you did a great job seeing as how you’ve never done this before but I don’t think we can count this as an actual hair cut.

Want to know something else? My eyebrows….yeah I can’t even tell you the last time I even attempted to straighten that whole situation out. Was it really at my best friends wedding last May that I last picked up a pair of tweezers?

To be perfectly honest I’ve never been one of those girls that is ever really pulled together. I was the friend that everyone else dressed when going out for a night, the victim of Friday night makeovers and my wardrobe consists of mostly hand me downs.

My “style” if you can call it that is a cross between stuff my mother in law bought but didn’t fit and impulse buys my best friend purchased and later realized she had made a mistake. Don’t get me wrong here…I am incredibly grateful for these items because without them I would literally be wearing a holy pair of jeans from high school that I refuse to give up and a t-shirt with a pig on it that I bought with my very first paycheck.

And so It seems I could use a bit of an overhaul. With 5 weddings (yes 5!!!) coming up over the next few months I need to get a move on but where to begin?

Here are my thoughts and I need YOU to help me out on this one. Currently I have pretty long, naturally wavy hair that was one upon a time layered in the front kind of like this:

Instyle Magazine

I’m thinking i could go back to this long and layered look pretty easily or I could be daring and try chopping it off like this:

The Hair Styler.com

Want to know what I’m really tempted to do? Chop it ALL OFF and go with something short and sassy like this:

New Short Hair Cuts.com

Problem here is that I’m ummm Not Mandy Moore. Yeah I think maybe only she can pull off a look like this but if I was really brave I would go for it. I’ve never, not once really done anything drastic (not counting the time hubby dyed my hair black for a halloween party and found out it wouldn’t wash out).

So Internet world…what do you think?

Right Now

Right now, I am…

Feeling full of family and love as we come down from our weekend high at grandma and grandpa’s house

Grateful for the little bit of rain we had this weekend as it reminded us to slow our pace and enjoy a quiet, mostly indoors day together

Celebrating a 5 day streak of great sleep from the little one

Cursing my oven just a little bit more…I swear I’m almost over my tantrum and will move on to more productive repair plans

List making as we prepare for our second off island trip with baby

Admiring my handsome, incredibly hard working hubby and feeling very (read that VERY) grateful for the gift he has given us by making it possible for me to stay home with baby

Wondering who is out there reading this blog? Seriously…is anyone there? Introduce yourself :)

7

7 is my new favorite number. Why? Because 7 months rocks!

Harper has always been a great baby and my best buddy but something magical happened when he turned 7 months. Believe it or not he is even more of an incredible little guy and friend. It’s as if someone turned on the big boy switch and over night my little guy sprouted his first tooth (bottom left/center), began to crawl (we call it the belly slither) and can even push from crawling to a sitting position. Add to this an even sillier personality, infectious laugh, a love for all things peek-a-boo and anything edible and you get the perfect baby…my baby!

IMG_4869.jpg

I’m pretty stoked on this little guy and love all of the time that we get to spend together. From beach afternoons and swimming, long walks through Waikiki, afternoons in the shade of a banyan tree, zoo meet ups with friends, library walks and sunset sails our days are full with wonderful sights, people and memories.

Some of my “favorites” lately:

Your giggle when playing the “elevator” game with daddy

The way you roll around in the grass like a wet dog and laugh as it tickles your back

How you stop, stare and are mesmerized by wind blowing through the trees (you have a way of making mama very present in everything that we do

)IMG_4921.JPG IMG_4957.jpg

IMG_4929.jpg

Watching you taste, feel and experiment with new foods is a riot and I’m so proud of your sophisticated palate (rosemary chicken, goat cheese and teriyaki salmon…you put your daddy to shame)

You little man have been “comfort” nursing for the first time in your life and although it has this mama up at all hours of the night I can’t help but cherish these moments I’ve worked so hard for us to share

Both mommy and daddy love bringing you into our bed each morning and waking up to your long drawn out yawns and lanky arm and leg stretches

IMG_4898.jpg

There is so much that we love about you and every day is an adventure. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep on saying it…you are awesome but PLEASE slow the heck down!
