Pulse

The flat gray pavement beneath my feet carries me through a city wonderland that I all too often forget to appreciate. Living in the heart of Waikiki I am accustomed to the non-stop “beep- beep- beep” of delivery trucks, the crashing of dumpsters on trash day, the squealing brakes of city buses, the sirens of police cars as they race down my street towards the Ala Wai, the hollers of party animals at 4am as they make their way home from the bars and you know what? I love it all.

To many of our visitors this noise is just too much to handle but for some reason I feel right at home amongst this chaos. For every rackety noise, there is also the distant laugher of wedding receptions and parties, the ringing of trolley bells carrying tourists throughout the city perched up on the railing with their cameras amazed at the sights they see, the soft violin of the old man who sits in front of McDonald’s and serenades all who pass, the whistle of the street performers, the surge of the surf on a big swell and the chanting of hawaiian hulas and hymns as the sunset performs its magic.

I love the rhythm of this place, the pulse of such a busy paradise nestled among the high rise buildings. I love the gathering at the shoreline as the sun slowly begins to set, casting a magical glow over playful waves. I love watching the little kids soak up their last few minutes of water and sand before they are carried off to bed past flowering plumeria trees. I love love love the reflection of the sun on all the windows of the tall buildings, the sunset is caught in each one of them and if you turn your eyes away from the ocean and look back at the city you will see a thousand sunsets at once. I love that I notice these things, that I get to spend so much time in this place, that its heartbeat and my own are one.

It’s comforting to know that no matter how busy my day has been, no matter how far away from “home” I might be, Waikiki is carrying on as usual. The boats will come in and go out, the tiki torches will be lit, the happy hours will continue and all of this magic is waiting for me whenever I choose.

Join me on a stroll through the neighborhood?

Pregnancy Survival List

As I get down to the final wire of this whole pregnancy gig I’ve been thinking a lot about the things that really helped me through the tough days. I think 90% of the whole surviving pregnancy game is attitude and surrounding yourself with people that support you and have a positive outlook and similar perspective on health, lifestyle etc… but there are also some actual “things” that helped me get along and I want to share them with you.

1. TUMS- I hate to start the list off with a “medication” because y’all know that I try everything humanely and naturally possible before resorting to the meds but I must admit that I would have literally checked myself into a hospital thinking I was having a heart attack had I not discovered the healing powers of TUMS. Not to scare any of your newbie pregnant women out there but heartburn can be a serious discomfort for a lot of pregnant women and I was most definitely among those who suffered SUFFERED!

If you are having discomfort from heartburn try eating smaller meals, drinking water in between your meals (not at the same time) and not lying down after eating. Take walks, breath fresh air. Try making a cup of tea with boiling water, ginger, cinnamon and honey. Try drinking a glass of milk or heating up some soy milk and honey before bed time. Try lots of things but if nothing works ask your doc if TUMS are ok for you to take and TAKE THEM!

I’ve been lucky and with the help of my crack (whoops I mean TUMS) I’ve been able to manage my heartburn and function on a pretty comfortable level throughout the day.

*Also, try to figure out what types of foods trigger the worst heartburn for you and avoid them. For some reason chocolate, blueberry yogurt, pita chips and cashews are a death sentence for me. Pretty much everything flares it up but these foods really set me off.

2. Body Pillow- During the first few months of my pregnancy I had a really difficult time with low back pain. The pain was different from any aches I had ever felt before and I think it was just the initial changing shape of my body settling in. With a body pillow I was able to find comfortable positions for sleeping, reading, and resting that took pressure off of my low back. Once I got over the first few months of my changing body, the back pain almost completely vanished. I still use my body pillow off and on and have heard that it is great to keep around for late night breast feeding and propping the baby up during play times.

3. Marie Mongan’s Hypnobirthing Book- I’ll write a separate post on this birthing philosophy later but want to mention that this book is where I really felt like I found a birthing philosophy that lined up with how I felt about pregnancy and birth. There are a lot of great relaxation techniques, positive affirmations and general information regarding pregnancy and birth that I think all expectant mothers can benefit from. I’ve adapted the belief that reading as much information about different birthing philosophies and techniques can only be a positive thing, expanding your arsenal of resources for days that your usual coping mechanisms don’t work and for having options during birth. This book keeps you focused on the joys of becoming a mother and helped me to think of how my baby was growing, changing and feeling throughout his 9 months and through the birthing process.

4. Prenatal Massage- It can be pricey and I am so fortunate to have a best friend who is a massage therapist so I fully took advantage of her services. Do yourself a favor and schedule a prenatal massage for once during east trimester and you will not regret it. The massage helps with relaxation, swelling, low back pain and so much more. It is an instant pick me up, makes you feel good about your body and how amazing pregnancy can be and is the perfect way to pamper yourself and your little one. Invest in yourself throughout your pregnancy and after delivery and I guarantee you will see the positive ripple effect. After a massage I was more patient with myself, my hubby and the challenges that came with a changing body.

5. Music- If you live in the stone age and haven’t heard of www.pandora.com you need to come into the light and check it out. Create personal radio stations and set aside some time in your day to just sit down with your feet up and relax. Music has a way of taking us into a place outside of ourselves and this calming effect is exactly what every pregnant girl needs at the end of the day. Also, invest in your itunes library. Add the new artist you’ve discovered through pandora to your ipod and take walks listening to the playlists your create. Listening to the same sets of music for me helps me relax quickly and deeply and I think will come in handy during labor because I’ll be familiar with the songs and the effect they can have on me.

I’m sure there is more that I can add to this list but to be honest there are some brownies and mint chocolate chip ice cream staring me down and I can no longer resist the temptation!

Me. You. Health.

I’m absolutely loving and wanting to share with you the website www.meyouhealth.com a fun place of daily “challenges”. Each day “Me You Health” introduces small actions, food for thought, goal making strategies, prompts and tips to help improve your well being, physically, mentally and emotionally. These small actions are something that can be accomplished each day and was created with the thought that your everyday choices can become everyday victories.

Today’s “challenge” was to share 5 things off of my bucket list. I think I first wrote a “bucket list” as an assignment in college and since then it has changed shape and evolved several times. If you’ve never written a bucket list it’s something very easy to do and a lot of fun. Your list can be crazy, wild, grand things you want to do or small scale. The main point is to make one, to dream, to reach for something and in doing so bring life into your life!

Five things off my bucket list:

1. Own land. Just a big enough piece of property where my kids can run around, get dirty, build a tree house, feel like they are hidden from the world but are really close enough to mama that they know they are safe, where they can dream and create wild play fantasies, where they can be kids and we can be free as a family.

2. Backpack through Denali National Park in Alaska (I really want to climb a glacier too–not like a full on crazy climb just a nice little afternoon try it out kind)

3. Stay at home with my kids until they are at least school age

4. Finally figure out how to make the perfect pie crust

5. Re-learn how to play the piano

Spoiled

I would officially like to nominate my man for husband of the year! Not only is he the most handsome, sweet, thoughtful, talented, smartest, bestest friend in the whole wide world but he also spoils and pampers me like no other and trust me…when you’re weeks/days/hours away from delivering a baby, pampering is just what you need.

As if his day to day pampering isn’t enough he pulled off the greatest home spa night of my life. Hubby arranged for my best buddy to pick me up at our house and drive us to our very own retreat at my in-laws house. He had set up a massage room complete with music, incense, candles, cucumbers and hot towels for our eyes and the best rub down ever! After our massages he moved us into the “spa” portion of our night which was just as impressive.

The spa wasn’t exactly working so hubby filled up the huge bathtub complete with bubbles, sparkling cider for me, red wine for my friend, chocolates, candles and some relaxing pandora music. While we were soaking he brought pizza for dinner and topped our soak off with a freshly baked brownie and vanilla bean ice cream! He even thought to warm up towels for us after the bath so that we wouldn’t be cold!

AND…

As if the night wasn’t already incredible enough he had more pampering planned! After our spa session we were treated to manicures and pedicures on the lanai while we watched an incredible and rare lightening storm over distant Waikiki and the mountains around us. This amazing display of nature coupled by such a thoughtful and relaxing night was absolutely magical.

I am officially the most spoiled wife there ever was and am so grateful to have such a sweet and romantic guy to treat both me and my friend to such a special night. He said that we worked so hard to make the holidays fun for all of our friends that he wanted to do something special for us and his spa retreat was certainly special..it was INCREDIBLE!

His perfect night of pampering has left me feeling so loved, so supported and relaxed that I know I can sail through these next few weeks of pregnancy enjoying each moment.

Thank you hubby for such a sweet gift and for loving me pig feet and all :)
