“Surfing is a special kind of madness, a feeling for the sea, a combination of love, knowledge, respect, fear- instinctive perception gained through repeated contact”
-Fred Wardy
The concern I keep getting from friends and family is what happens when you are pregnant and can’t surf anymore? Well, who says that just because you are preggo means you have to stop surfing! Medically speaking, there is no reason a woman can not continue to surf all the way through full term. If you are able to, you can surf until the very end.
The baby is really very protected and the main reason women stay out of the water is due to concerns of collision with your board or other surfers. In actuality, the first trimester is the most critical period of your pregnancy and the time where you should take most caution. For the most part, the main concern most women express is comfort. Finding a board, a position and the strength to continue surfing well into the ninth month shows some mean determination and love for the ocean.
Most women find that their surfing becomes more soulful, feeling connected to the water, sharing time with their spouse or friends, counting down the days to baby. Surfing while pregnant is a great way to stay strong, keep in shape and be physically prepared to pop out that lil’ grom when the time comes. I would advise keeping out of the water on bigger days, surfing less crowded spots and staying within your comfort level but feel confident you can and many women do surf while pregnant! Always, always check with your doctor as each pregnancy is different and you should only continue surfing if it feels right for you. As for me, I hope to be out in the lineup when my first contractions hit!
